Obsessions and Compulsions - Quick Facts

  • Obsessions & Compulsions affect people of all ages.
  • The most common expressed behaviour is hand-washing.
  • Many things we emphasized for safety during the COVID pandemic, as well as broad sweep advertising (for cleaning products), have adversely affected those with obsessive-compulsive leanings (sub-clinical expression) as well as those with full expression / diagnosis.

Obsessions & Compulsions are anxiety on steroids. Frequently, there is a miswiring in the anterior cingulate that recruits the behavior and then runs away with it. At Swingle Clinic, we will look at key areas of the brain that regulate cognitive rigidity (when you get an idea in your head and you can’t get it out), mood regulation, and impulse resistance / resilience (in the frontal lobes), and the ability to quiet (occipital region). Working on the affected areas of the brain while addressing the expressed behavior can be helpful in symptom reduction and, in some cases, elimination.
